Hacia un Sarapiquí orgánico: Que aspectos son claves para una economía verde en la producción de piña orgánica dentro del cantón de Sarapiquí para su exportación a mercados europeos.

Abstract

El documento tiene como propósito analizar factores esenciales para implementar la producción de piña orgánica en Sarapiquí, considerando la problemática ambiental causada por el cultivo convencional y promoviendo la oportunidad derivada de la creciente demanda europea de productos orgánicos. Mediante el planteamiento del problema se pretende responder a las limitaciones actuales del modelo tradicional y a los requisitos ambientales del mercado europeo. El objetivo principal es identificar oportunidades, retos y condiciones necesarias para facilitar la transición hacia cultivos orgánicos exportables, específicamente de piña. Se aplicó una metodología mixta, combinando análisis documental, encuestas a 106 habitantes de Sarapiquí y cuatro entrevistas semiestructuradas con actores clave del sector productivo y exportador, lo que permitió integrar dimensiones cuantitativas y cualitativas. Entre los hallazgos se evidencia la preocupación por el ambiente, el interés en la producción orgánica y la falta de apoyo institucional. Las entrevistas destacan los altos costos, la complejidad de las certificaciones, las brechas de capacitación, la relevancia de la trazabilidad y el potencial del mercado europeo como consumidor de productos orgánicos. En este contexto, la marca país aparece como un diferenciador estratégico. Sin embargo, se identifican posibles limitaciones en el sector productivo, como la falta de financiamiento, la resistencia al cambio, la escasa capacitación técnica y la complejidad normativa, las cuales dificultan la transición. Esto evidencia la necesidad de políticas públicas y de un fortalecimiento institucional. Las implicaciones prácticas de los resultados pueden orientar las decisiones de productores sarapiqueños, instituciones públicas y exportadores en la exploración de estrategias para capacitación y acceso a certificaciones. El valor central de este estudio radica en aportar evidencia local integrada sobre un tema crucial para el cantón de Sarapiquí, que vincula la sostenibilidad en el contexto productivo y las oportunidades reales de exportación orgánica.

This document aims to analyze essential factors for implementing organic pineapple production in Sarapiqui, considering the environmental issues caused by conventional cultivation and highlighting the opportunity created by the growing European demand for organic products. Through the formulation of the problem, it seeks to address the current limitations of the traditional model and the environmental requirements of the European market. The main objective is to identify opportunities, challenges, and necessary conditions to facilitate the transition toward exportable organic crops, specifically pineapple. A mixed methodology was applied, combining documentary analysis, surveys administered to 106 inhabitants of Sarapiqui, and four semi-structured interviews with key actors from the productive and exporting sectors, allowing for the integration of quantitative and qualitative dimensions. Among the findings, there is evidence of environmental concern, interest in organic production, and a lack of institutional support. The interviews highlight high costs, certification complexity, training gaps, the relevance of traceability, and the potential of the European market as a consumer of organic products. In this context, the country brand emerges as a strategic differentiator. However, potential limitations were identified within the productive sector, including lack of financing, resistance to change, limited technical training, and regulatory complexity, which pose barriers to the transition. This reveals the need for public policies and institutional strengthening. The practical implications of the results may guide the decisions of Sarapiqui producers, public institutions, and exporters in exploring strategies for training and facilitating access to certifications. The central value of this study is that it provides integrated local evidence on a topic currently at the center of attention in the canton of Sarapiqui, linking sustainability within the productive context to real opportunities for organic export.
